Thinking about Us & how it’s Lupita’s FIRST film w/ her as the lead. Lupita is an Oscar winner & it has me thinking about how, if it weren’t for Ryan Coogler & Jordan Peele (both relatively NEW filmmakers) she might not have had these opportunities. Yes she’s been in StarWars...
...yes she was in The Jungle Book. Both of those films were excellent. But Lupita is a star. An Oscar winning actress & it was because two great black filmmakers were able to “break through” that she’s getting her things. Someone on here said...
...remember J Hud won an Oscar & her next role was Carrie Bradshaw’s maid? That is NO shade to J Hud but it just goes to show (what Monique said), the Oscars mean something TOTALLY diff for Black Women. Even Mahershela has been working constantly & has won TWO back to back...
...Oscars. He & Denzel are the only Black Actors to have that shared history, so I’m not saying this happens a lot for Black Men either. I’m saying, complex stories about & starring Black Women are not common. And filmmakers who WANT to tell those stories have a hard time.
Also has me thinking about Yalitza Aparicio and if she’s still interested in acting. I know during casting, she was on summer break from her teaching job or something, but if she still wants to act, what opportunities are going to come her way, if at all? If more Indigenous...
...were given opportunities, we wouldn’t have to worry about that. After The Help, women from that film were offered so many amazing film opportunities. None of them were Viola OR Octavia who won the Oscar for that film. And if you’ve been paying attention, Octavia said...
...at Sundance LAST YEAR that the FIRST film where she got paid what she deserved was a film she produced with Jessica Chastain in which JESSICA demanded Octavia and her make the same $. This was AFTER her Oscar. Recognize the pattern. I’m so happy Lupita is getting her things.
I need more Black women, (dark skinned, light skinned, brown skinned, trans) women to be getting these opportunities. I need more non-white passing WOC to be getting these opportunities. As a black Woman filmmaker, it’s an exciting time. It really is.
Reminds me also if how, it was AVA who had the power to be able to make history and say, ONLY WOMEN DIRECTORS for Queen Sugar. On a network OWNED BY ANOTHER BLACK WOMEN. Could she have done that anywhere else??? I don’t know. But I know she’s making history right now...
...and bringing others with her.
