Many high school and college students in Pittsburgh plan to walk out of their schools today at 11 a.m. to join a noon demonstration at the City-County Building for Antwon Rose.
The walkouts come after a weekend of demonstrations across the city following the acquittal of Officer Michael Rosfeld in Antwon's killing.
Students at schools downtown will walk out at noon. At the University of Pittsburgh, a walkout is planned for 10 a.m., where students will coalesce on the Union Lawn before boarding buses downtown.
A sizable crowd already forming at the City County Building, with only two groups having arrived — dozens from the City Charter High School and 35-40 from U. of Pitt.
As hundreds gather, a group looks to have split off to head to courthouse. Chanting can be heard in the distance. This main group is large. Rolling road closures in city.
“How many of you are registered to vote?” a leader asks. The crowd cheers. Then, two chants: ‘Hey hey, ho ho, Stephen Zappala has got to go’ and ‘Vote him out.’
Hundreds are now marching down Grant.
To give you an idea of how big this march is, here they are passing the Steel Tower.
They’re building a giant human circle in the intersection near Liberty Center. “How many of you are students?” Almost all raise their fists.
As the march heads down Liberty, even more students are joining. Massive crowd.
Though it’s turning signs into mush, the rain isn’t stopping this crowd from growing. It’s currently stopped in a circle at Wood and Liberty.
Police have closed the Wood Street station. They’re telling people to catch the T from Gateway.
Wow. The crowd here in downtown Pittsburgh.
Arms linked, @jasiri_x and other 1Hood members lead the group of marchers down Wood Street.
At intersection of Wood and Fifth.
Making their way toward Blvd of the Allies. No end in sight to this crowd of students.
Down Blvd. of the Allies now, in the direction of the courthouse where they started.
The march is making its way down Second Avenue toward the Allegheny County Jail.
The organizers asked the front rows to turn around and see what’s behind them.
The backdrop to this chant: The Allegheny County Jail.
The students cheered and waved as they noticed some in the jail flickering the lights on and off.
Groups are peeling off and it looks to be wrapping up soon. Story to come later.
