One thing that jumps out from the “media got Russia probe wrong” montages is how much Watergate still informs DC punditry. A lot of the first “this is it for Trump” quotes were about the firing of Comey; the precedent DC went to immediately was the Sunday Night Massacre.
So you have all these quotes about how Trump might have doomed his presidency bc, for DC’s wise men, Watergate set the boundaries.

What if... not everything is Watergate? And what if those boundaries vanished decades ago?

I’ve thought for a long time that the working template for presidential scandals is not Watergate, but Iran Contra. Protect the president at all costs, and go to the base to say it’s a witch hunt. Worked for Bill Clinton eventually, too.
