The EU is sceptical of PM May’s chances of getting the Brexit deal through parliament. EU27 ambassadors were told today that the UK faces two choices: no-deal or a long extension.
Both choices come with a political and economic cost for the 27. A long extension would see the UK take part in the bloc’s decision making processes, while no-deal could see some member states & sectors require financial assistance.
In the event of no-deal the EU would set the UK pre-conditions – on financial commitments, citizens’ rights and the border in Northern Ireland – very similar to those in the withdrawal agreement before entering trade talks
EU and European government officials are adamant that the UK would have to hold European Parliament elections if it wants a long extension, and that the EU27 leaders will not change their position on this
The decision on whether to delay Brexit further, should the UK ask for another extension, will ultimately be one for EU leaders. The 27 are expected to meet on April 10, according to a diplomatic note seen by @BuzzFeedNews
