Minister tells me of a meeting of ministers with the PM in Downing St now following the third defeat of her Withdrawal Agreement... not about standing down but significant, nonetheless.
This delegation of ministers in Downing Street is urging the PM to say no to a softer Brexit and to go for No Deal Brexit
So @SamCoatesTimes says that dozens of MPs next week have a tutorial scheduled on what the customs union is from some trade experts...
Number 10 were earlirr playing down the prospect of No Deal - would not repeat the description of the European Commission that “no Deal is now the likely scenario”
It’s for Conservative MPs, as I understand it, organised by backbenchers...

Talks not going well...Labour spox:
“We are disappointed government has not offered real change or compromise.

“We urge the PM to come forward with genuine changes to her deal in an effort to find an alternative that can win support in Parliament and bring country together.”
New - source tells me Government not suggesting any actual changes not just to Withdrawal Agreement, but the Political Declaration too.
Instead a clarificatory memorandum about how the Govt interprets the PD.

Given Barnier has repeatedly offered to upgrade the PD, some surprise
A bit more promised in such a memo and in the ratification legislation on workers rights.

But again NO CHANGES to the Political Declaration offered.

& even so, difficulties in how/if that would be respected by new Tory leadership.

Electoral Commission EP election timetable: A great bit of trivia for absolute Brexit nerds - April 12 deadline (midnight) for calling EP elections only for the SW region, because it includes Gibraltar, because there is an extra bank holiday. For rest of UK its 15 April midnight.
By 24 April the Conservatives will have to decide if they are going to stand in these European elections now being prepared ... as will TIG etc ...

PM letter to Tusk asking for extension till 30 June (again).

The key thing here though is that she has committed to preparing the European Elections including setting the Order (in Privy Council - no legislation required) for the EP elections next month.
To be clear: although the legislation to cancel EP elections (SI) was passed, it was not to be commenced until exit day. No legislation or votes in Parliament required to hold EP elections, merely an Order in Privy Council next week...

Each side has assembled negotiating teams for a full day of talks tomorrow, I understand. Sounds quite positive...

It is widely accepted that the UK Government and Parliament made a major mistake in invoking Article 50 without a plan.

Rather than learn from this Government and many MPs now suggest we need to support the Withdrawal Agreement without a plan for the future.

Strangely enough, nobody actually thanks MPs for outsourcing their critical faculties to opinion polls, the media, or similar.

They will not thank MPs in a year’s time if it turns out it was not a good idea to sign the Withdrawal Agreement now.

Lots of chatter about whether a third vote on the withdrawal agreement should be ruled out by the Speaker. It's pretty clear to me that he should not, for three related reasons. /1
First, the Commons must be in charge of its own procedure. If it wants to approve the withdrawal agreement then by definition it wants the opportunity to vote on it again. If it doesn’t want to approve the agreement it doesn’t matter if it votes on it again. /2
This point is the flip side of Bercow’s decision in January to allow a dodgy amendment (which MPs went on to accept). The constitutional ground zero has to be the will of the majority of the Commons. If you applauded him then you should not want him to rule out a vote now. /3

EU27 ambassadors were told today that PM May told Tusk at their meeting in Sharm that the UK might need a short extension even if MPs back the withdrawal agreement, according to a note of the ambassadors meeting seen by @BuzzFeedNews
@BuzzFeedNews The 27 diplomats were also told that the chances of May getting her deal through parliament are slim. The EU reiterated its position, where it can help, that the backstop cannot be changed. Efforts by the UK to find alternatives are "fading away"

I am sorry I have to put my poor followers through this. But if similar nonsense is said on #r4today it takes a bit of a correction (thread)
1) First things first: the Withdrawal Agreement. During the transition period we all hope that things will continue as they are now. Including EU FTAs. That is not unlikely, but not guaranteed. Why is it not guaranteed?
2) EU FTAs are treaties between the EU, generally also its member states (they are mixed agreements, all but two of them, soon three, I’ll spare you the details) and a third state.

A thread on the in my view misconceived transition, just agreed between the EU and the UK. My argument is that it fails the EU's own democracy standards, as set in Art 10 TEU ("functioning of the Union shall be founded on representative democracy"). 1/
The UK will no longer be a Member State, but the TEU also says that the Union must uphold its values in its relations with the wider world (Art 3(5)). Does an agreement which asks a third country to comply with all of the acquis comply with this instruction? 2/
Brexiteers may conclude that this constitutes EU bullying. But the UK itself asked for a transition, and did not come with a more detailed proposal. It also insists on leaving the EU by March 2019. So both the EU and the UK are responsible for this. 3/
