From my new research, out today: half of voters think they're not represented by any of the current parties - and they're as likely to say it's because they're all the same as they are to think they're too extreme
This isn't very surprising when you see what the voters (including many of their own voters) think of Labour and the Tories...
Some have argued that there is space for a new party in the liberal, remain-voting centre - and there is. But it's not the only gap - many who take the opposite view on a wide range of issues also feel unrepresented.
Of our two hypothetical new parties, the liberal 'New Party A' and more socially conservative 'New Party B' were almost equally popular.
In fact, in a hypothetical election, more popular than the existing parties. Unlikely in a real election, of course - but shows people are open to alternatives.
But defecting MPs will find it hard to shake off their old party's baggage. What would most put off potential supporters of our 'New Party A'? Ex-Tories in senior positions. And vice versa for 'New Party B'.
