Exclusive: In 2011, Jeremy Corbyn wrote an article defending “blood libel” cleric Raed Salah, ending it with “It’s time that Western governments stood up to the zionist lobby which seems to conflate criticism of Israel with anti-semitism.”
This message fits into a pattern of behavior from Corbyn. He frequently cited the Goldstone Report, until in 2011 Goldstone retracted the claim that Israel deliberately targeted civilians. To Corbyn this was the result of “Zionist lobbyists” of applying “huge pressure”
In April 2011, Corbyn wrote Goldstone “accused Israel of war crimes and of deliberately targeting civilians — but it now appears he’s changed his mind. There is no doubt that Goldstone was put under huge pressure from zionist lobbyists and has suffered a great deal of abuse.”
When it comes to Israel, Corbyn always sees something sinister. He repeatedly accused Israel of influencing US foreign policy, while at other times describing it as a US “proxy”
In November 2011, Corbyn wrote that he feared “the US will be goaded into the diversion of yet another foreign war. The most likely source of an attack on Iran is not necessarily an overt Nato/US operation but Israel acting as a proxy.”
In the same article, Corbyn wrote of “the numerous meetings Liam Fox and Adam Werrity had with the Israeli military and their unabashedly staunchly zionist approach to Israel’s relations with the rest of the region, increased the concerns even more”
It isn’t entirely clear what Corbyn means when he refers to Liam Fox and Adam Werrity’s “unabashedly staunchly zionist approach”, but Corbyn seems very concerned by it.
Corbyn also cited Craig Murray, who has also been criticised over alleged antisemitism. “Werrity for example, is reported by Craig Murray, former ambassador and now human rights activist, to have told the Israeli government that Britain supported plots against Ahmadinejad”.
Corbyn wrote about another UK politician. He thought MP Robert Halfon, member of Conservative Friends of Israel was “doing his bit” for Israel when he criticized Iran in Parliament.
In December 2011, Corbyn claimed “Harlow Conservative MP Robert Halfon, a strong supporter of Israel, did his bit to prove this point on Tuesday by claiming that Iran “is in essence the new Soviet Union of the Middle East."
Corbyn has also repeatedly suggested Israel has some form of control over the US. He claimed Obama was required to appear at AIPAC.
In March 2012, Corbyn wrote “Barack Obama has had a strange week. He made his obligatory appearance at the America Israel Public Affairs Committee, pledging full support to Israel in all its endeavours and praising himself for sending it yet more high-calibre heavy weaponry”
In the same article, Corbyn added: “Netanyahu appears to be running US foreign policy, despite Israel’s total economic dependence on the US. And Israel is apparently above criticism by the US or anyone else for its possession of over 200 nuclear warheads”.
