It is very disappointing that the cabinet has decided to entrust the final handling of Brexit to Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party. It now seems all too likely that British trade policy and key law making powers will be handed over to Brussels - with no say for the U.K.
As it is, we now face the ridiculous possibility of being forced to contest the European elections more than three years after leaving the EU and having to agree to exit terms that in no way resemble what the people were promised when they voted to leave
The PM and cabinet have concluded that any deal is better than no deal, and this is truly a very bad deal indeed - one that leaves us being run by the EU. I can under no circumstances vote for a deal involving a customs union as I believe that does not deliver on the referendum

Those who say that it’s impossible to get a better deal from the EU than Theresa May’s deal - that the EU has rules as immutable as those of the Medes and the Persians - have obviously never seen the horse trading and back room compromises that characterise every EU summit 1/4
What is different about this negotiation is one simple fact: the EU believed that despite her ‘No Deal is Better than a Bad Deal’ rhetoric, Theresa May was desperate for a deal at any price 2/4

This is an important moment. Clearly No10 are negotiating a “backstop” that makes the UK a permanent EU colony. We cannot escape EU laws & ECJ until they allow us to – which they may never do. That’s not what the biggest majority in our history voted for #NoColonyStatus 1/4
This backstop keeps the UK in the Customs Union, keeps Northern Ireland in the single market, and almost certainly enhances NI/GB checks. It *will* apply after 2020 unless the EU agrees it won’t. And they will only agree if we keep our rules in lockstep with theirs 2/4
This backstop closes off our options. It means we cannot have no deal / WTO or SuperCanada. Under either our rules could differ from the EU’s – so they will keep us in the backstop instead. It means, in fact, that the only possible deal is Chequers 3/4

Jeremy Corbyn and his Labour delegation warned both Guy Verhofstadt and Michel Barnier that cross-party Brexit talks are non-existent with the Conservatives. Brussels has placed a lot of importance on such discussions to break the #Brexit deadlock.
Keir Starmer told Verhofstadt that they’d held one discussion in which Theresa May instantly shut down the idea of a customs union as part of the future relationship.
Meanwhile EU 27 ambassadors were told Stephen Barclay and Geoffrey Cox didn’t table any new text as part of an effort to win fresh legal assurances that the Irish backstop is temporary and not a trap

Jeremy Corbyn's true purpose in calling a general election is to secure not just brexit but hard #Brexit this election can only happen if mays deal is voted down and therefore the default becomes no deal
Any general election would dissolve Parliament and therefore make any steps to avoid no deal #Brexit impossible for most of the remaining time to brexit day . Jeremy corbyn is aware of this
Corbyn said on Marr he would submit a no confidence vote at a time of his choosing but soon. Corbyns intention is to table it so that any general election is held so close to brexit day no government will be able to halt no deal

1/ @jk_rowling thank you for sharing Nuddering's thread. I am a British man born in Israel, a child of one English parent and one Israeli. My grandparents migrated to the British Mandate before WWII. My Grandfather lost almost his entire family to the Nazis. Some thoughts:
2/ It's 1995. I'm in the Territorial Army. We have to fill out forms during basic training. It asks where you're born. Word spreads. Later my Corporal makes constant jokes about 'my big nose'. I'm quietly disgusted but not shocked. Racism in the British Army? It's almost SOP.
3/ Fast forward. It's 2006. Israel is at war with Hezbullah in Southern Lebanon. My cousin is killed by an RPG that incinerates his truck. There's a burial with a casket but there's no physical body to bury. Israel is traumatised by the war. Public consensus is that it has lost.
