The existential terror the UK political system experiences at the thought of truly leaving the EU, so bad that it is willing to split parties, overturn democracy, abandon centuries-old Parliamentary standing orders & risk riots & terrorism to avoid it, is just amazing to behold.
MPs used to claim Eurosceptics were obsessed with the EU. But the priority MPs reveal *they* place on the EU - so great they'll give up absolutely anything (democracy, party, constitution, personal honour) to stay close to it - is a priority beyond any expectation or rationality.
Since MPs have demonstrated they are willing to burn everything down rather than accept truly leaving the EU, why on earth did they agree to hold the euref? Did they just not realize how much they cared abt us staying in the EU until they found we were in the process of leaving?
Find someone you can love & sacrifice for as much as the UK political system loves & sacrifices for avoiding a No Deal Brexit.

In a free trade agreement countries remove tariffs btwn themselves. In a customs union as well as removing tariffs btwn themselves they also agree to set the same tariffs on other countries - the "Common External Tariff".
There is nothing to prevent countries from having free trade agreements covering most products but a customs union for a few. eg the UK & EU cld agree to an FTA that included a customs union just for cars. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/…
In the EEC when tariff barriers came down countries raised non-tariff barriers instead. NB these *rose* in compensation. Therefore to make trade free, the EEC felt it needed to strip away those non-tariff barriers as well, creating the Single Market.

The most fundamental & enduring division in English politics was that over the Exclusion Bill of 1679. The "Tories" favoured allowing James II to become King, allowing England to fall under the pan-European political structure (at that time the Papacy). The "Whigs" opposed this.
As their Jacobite opponents discredited themselves the Whigs eventually became utterly dominant. From the mid 18th century on, the UK was a one-party state - the Whig Party.
The Whig Party eventually split into 2 factions. One Whig faction eventually, in the early 19th century, came to be known as "Tories", despite having no connection to the previous party called by that name.

Thank you @jillongovt for posting this-must listen. Great to have a focus on the future. Interestingly I disagree with Sir Ivan on his portrayal of the #EU approach to negs- technocratic & run by the theologians & not strategic in summary. @BrigidLaffan
In my view EU had 3 strategic interests to protect in Brexit negs which it has done. 1. Following the portrayal of EU as weak & disintegrating during ref, EU had to assert its centrality in Europe. @BrigidLaffan
2. Membership has to matter/a departing state that wants to retain a lot of the status quo cannot be allowed to do so. 3. The rules based system had to be protected. @BrigidLaffan

@CER_Grant @NewStatesman @CER_EU 1. The U.K. post Brexit cannot avail of the European Arrest Warrant unless there is ECJ oversight- any request would be challenged in EU27 courts. Other areas that involve individual rights are similar @BrigidLaffan

How @DailyMailUK twisted the results of @Survation poll and created a nice little frontpage to support Theresa May with some beautiful YESes in red and some lovely supporting words, even though the front page does not actually reflects the results of the poll...
So, let's have a closer look at some of the questions asked and the ACTUAL answers of voters...

All the times the govt's own EU referendum pamphlet, delivered to every house, said that voting Leave meant "less access", "losing full access" & "uncertainty and risk" about the Single Market. But a majority voted Leave anyway.

In 46 years the UK electorate has been allowed 2 votes on EEC/EU matters. Over the same period the EU has changed beyond recognition. Here are just some of the things no-one voted for /1

No-one voted for the UK to leave EFTA in 1972. EFTA dis not affect agriculture or fisheries and did not operate external tariffs. Countries were free to establish individual customs duties or FTA /2
No-one voted for the UK to join the European Economic Community in 1972. There were 4 countries in the Accession Treaty and the other 3 were given a referendum. Denmark and Ireland voted yes while Norway voted No ./3
