Corbyn doesn’t mention Brexit in #PMQs. Understandable with compromise talks lined up for this afternoon. Focuses on Universal Credit, poverty instead. PM bracing herself from some furious Qs from the benches behind her, I suspect.
Not long ago the PM would say a Brexit deal must deliver her red lines of independent law-making, trade. Not anymore. In response to Owen Smith’s #PMQs question, she says she wants to end free movement. That’s about it. Clearly prepared to soften her position.
The PM’s new Brexit buzz phrases: “Orderly,” “as soon as possible,” and “without having to fight European elections.” How far we have come since independent trade policy, no ECJ, and no payments to the EU #PMQs.
Asked by Christopher Chope to list positive opportunities offered by a no deal Brexit, the PM fails to suggest any. Doesn’t even say the UK would eventually thrive. She has totally abandoned the ERG back benches #PMQs.
Nick Boles says he is suspicious about the PM’s 11th hour conversion to a cross-party approach and asks her if she has ditched her old red lines. PM days she is approaching talks in a “constructive” spirit as she wants to get a deal done #PMQs.
Theresa May is to meet with Jeremy Corbyn and his team for Brexit talks at 14:30. Expected to last around an hour with the possibility of further talks. Chief Whip Julian Smith and Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay are set to attend. Civil servants too.
Corbyn will be joined by Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer, Labour’s Chief Whip Nick Brown, and Shadow Business Secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey. He is meeting Nicola Sturgeon before meeting the PM.
