I hadn't previously registered Vernon Bogdanor as an expert in Customs Unions, and on the basis of this letter he isn't. Once again you have to question the role of the media including the likes of FT and BBC in spreading inaccuracies
Various experts including @AnnaJerzewska and @DmitryOpines have proper Customs Union threads and articles but the big point to know is that the details would have to be negotiated and that would take time - years
Until negotiated a Customs Union is neither the worst or best deal the UK could have with the EU, it is just another aspiration for the future. We can guess some of it, but dismissing or lauding it just continues the immature UK Brexit debate

Not surprisingly the IEA is against the idea of the UK in a Customs Union with the EU thetimes.co.uk/article/brexit…
Any serious economic analysis would however say the benefit of lower barriers to our nearest market will outweigh potential benefits from notional future trade agreements. There are however political and foreign policy arguments against a Customs Union
Once you stop inventing numbers, the question remaining to be addressed is the extent to which the UK is willing to sacrifice access to close markets (and likely economic growth) for political sovereignty.

Am I missing anything while out of regular Internet connectivity? On this evidence not much, for these words from Liam Fox would have rather more impact if he'd shown over the last three years what the benefits of an independent UK trade policy could be.
Of course a UK outside a Customs Union can have trade deals, but with benefits and costs. He has never set this out properly in three years in office (and there's reasonable grounds for thinking UK trade deals would be a contest between farmers and financial services)
Ah well, perhaps if we get the long extension we can have a few months where we debate this all properly. Over and out again...

Over the last month, Speaker Pelosi and liberals in Washington have put their personal differences with President Trump over the security of our border and the paychecks of federal workers.
Time and time again, President Trump proposed reasonable solutions that would open the government and secure our borders, while also including policies that Democrats like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have previously supported.
Yet each time, Pelosi and Schumer refused to come to the table or even present a counteroffer. Now, once again, President Trump is exhibiting leadership by agreeing to re-open even though we still haven’t reached an agreement on border security.

There is also a link to an updated Karlsson paper (he, much loved of Brexiters) that offers some clarification about underlying assumptions
I will remind people, again, that Trusted trader schemes would NOT cover the bulk of border passes in Ireland.

That is a factual reality
The bulk involves ad hoc trade crossing that does not really meet the criteria for trusted trader.

Nor can it respond to the untrusted trade
This is Karlsson’s most recent statement.

The EU does not accept that this can realistically do away with border checks in the current circumstances.
