The real penalties for standing up to the political superstructure are soft ones. You get blacklisted by the BBC. You are not invited to Government sponsored stuff run by the likes of @UKandEU. Big funders shun you. You have to decide if those penalties are worth it.
It shouldn't really be a surprise that the British establishment furiously resists challenge. But it is one of the features of British society that is most corrosive to its proper functioning.

Extraordinary for the Department of Health to be pushing advice that epilepsy sufferers should simply "Keep calm and carry on". THREAD.
Lots of extraordinary things about that tweet - not least the denial of a linkage to Brexit. Here's what the Department of Health's rushed consultation said.

The linkage, literally, could not be clearer.
Indeed, that rushed consultation (why was it rushed if not because it was in contemplation of No Deal?) goes on explicitly to contemplate that No Deal might generate "multiple large shortages".

The arguments against this amendment in the Lords (waitingfortax.com/2019/04/04/an-…) are so reminiscent of the arguments about why I was wrong to pursue the Wightman case (and are being made by many of the same people). Here's what I'm saying to them about why the amendment is needed.
Here's what the EU Council Decision says about an extension beyond 12 April. Nothing in the Cooper/Letwin Bill puts the PM under any obligation to "indicate a way forward... for consideration". So it's as easy as you like for the PM to sidestep it.
And all the signs are that that's exactly what she's choosing to do. Isn't this exactly what you'd say today if you were her and had decided to go for No Deal?

If this is right, the Government is playing roulette with our future. And following the decision of MPs (and the *unforgiveable* decision of the Labour Party) not to support the Cherry Motion, power to decide whether to No Deal or Revoke rests entirely in the hands of a Tory PM.

For those wondering, the Business of the House Motion adopted yesterday creates Parliamentary time in the Commons to deal with any amendments made in the Lords.

It is easy to start normalising the ways the Abbott/Turnbull/Morrission Gment has abused the union movement, and overlook the consequences for doing so. Let’s remember:
The union royal commission:
- terms of reference go back 20 years
- free reign on all unions
- appointment of a commissioner who was involved in fundraising for the Liberal Party
- dedicated police force
- dedicated hotline
- when for 2 years whilst bank RC when for 1
- over 200 witnesses whilst banks had 69
- union leaders phones tapped
- extensive subpoenas issued taking up massive resources to comply
