This is the central paradox of #Brexit which is incredibly simple but has been buried in the noise

There is a #Brexit which gives us "freedom" but at an unacceptable cost - hard managed Brexit to no deal crash out

@KirstyS_Hughes 2) whether we crash out with no deal or exit in a managed fashion with a minimal FTA the knock on costs over the mid to long term would be unacceptable to the public (ironically, probably to many leavers included)

And the backstop is a legal requirement anyway

@KirstyS_Hughes 3) there's also a Brexit which has an acceptable cost but unacceptable loss of autonomy. Even if we settle on a CU or CU+SM or some fudge in between it still makes the UK a rule taker.

It's an unsustainable model, we'll be fighting over it for the next 10 years

@KirstyS_Hughes 4) if we were a mature country with sufficient cash & flexibility, then some variation of the Liberal Leave/Norway model where the UK gradually pivoted away from the EU might have worked.

But our politicians are buffoons

@KirstyS_Hughes 5) fundamentally no workable Brexit exists. Corbyn & May can scrabble about trying to produce some kludge but it will fall apart in a few years because it will be toxic to Leavers & Remainers alike.

We have to find a way back to Remain as a country

@KirstyS_Hughes 6) the only reason we still haven't got back to Remain is because too many politicians from Corbyn to May to Mogg have misled the public by trying to pretend there is a mythical Brexit which is simultaneously low cost & gives us autonomy. There just isn't.

@KirstyS_Hughes 7) a costly hard Brexit/no deal Brexit is unacceptable
A fudged vassalage Brexit is unsustainable

We're no further forward after 3 years because of this simple reality

We just need to Remain
