Violence, Imposition Mars MDC District Congresses In Manicaland

MDC congress elections for district level failed to proceed in four of the party’s Manicaland districts on Saturday
2/23 as violence broke out at some voting points while allegations of candidates imposition also took centre stage. Elections were supposed to be held on Saturday to elect district executives for Makoni Central, Makoni West, Mutare Central as well as Chikanga-Dangamvura districts
3/23 but all failed to take place for various reasons ranging from violence to candidate imposition.

“The Nelson Chamisa leadership must stop interfering with our district processes here,” a ward chairperson could be heard at a voting point in Makoni Central.
4/23 “There is no democracy any more in the party. Why are they afraid to let us vote for our preferred leaders?”

A national executive team from Harare which was led by Clifford Hlatwayo was accused by Manicaland structures of candidates imposition and vote-buying,
5/23 leading to ugly skirmishes reminiscent of the violence that broke out in other districts like Kuwadzana, Chegutu and Chitungwiza.

In Makoni Central, five pro-Douglas Mwonzora supporters were bashed by fellow party members aligned to MDC president Nelson Chamisa.
6/23 Legislator for the area, businessman David Tekeshe, who is also reportedly a Douglas Mwonzora supporter, was squaring off with fellow legislator Prosper Mutseyami, a pro-Chamisa candidate.
7/23 The voting could not proceed, but the congress supervising team led by National Executive members Clifford Hlatwayo, Tarusengwa, Mandere, and Muzoda reportedly declared Mutseyami the winner despite the fact that people were blocked from voting.
8/23 In Mutare Central, police were called in after violence broke out as the same National Executive team led by Clifford Hlatwayo attempted to bring in people from outside the district to participate in the voting.
9/23 “Police were called in as skirmishes were building up,” an MDC member told ZOOMZimbabwe.

She added: “The Chamisa camp bussed in people from Mutare South, Hatzell, Africa University and some other plots and farms in those areas to come and vote in Mutare Central.”
10/23 One candidate named Chipara, who is understood to be pro-Mwonzora, was meant to square off with one Mr. Karuru, a Chamisa ally.
An eyewitness described how the drama played out leading to the cancellation of the voting process after police were called in.
11/23 “Trouble started when people who are not from our district, some of whom came in farm tractors, came to the voting point. This did not sit well with locals who fought to have the voting stopped.
12/23 “A fight ensued, but police were quick to respond after being called in, and it is the police who stopped the process. We are unsure when the vote will happen, if at all, but our fear is that a candidate will be imposed as happened in the run-up to 2018 elections.”
13/23 A source in Makoni West said that suspected politicians from Harvest House in Harare, reportedly went around inducing people to vote in a certain way using RTGS$10 “gifts”.
14/23 “The same rigging that saw primary elections being abandoned countrywide in 2018 is back with us,” a Makoni West MDC supporter said. “If you think there is democracy under this current MDC leadership, dream on.”
