i listened to neil cicierega way back when he was called trapezoid, and i stopped being aware of his releases for a long time because that was kind of hard back in the day so i didn't actually find out about nature tapes until like 2015?
so like all the music i'd heard from him had been when he was a teen and it was all imo pretty childish, in a way i won't bother to get into atm because it'd take way too many tweets and wouldn't mean anything
lcd soundsystem voice i was there when his ebaumsworld song came out and it contained a single cuss and i was like "oh my god" because until that point he had been on the "not legally allowed to say Fuck" part of the chart
so like a decade passed after that, and then i found out nature tapes existed, and it's such a jarring shift in tone from what i'd known before, it was just unbelievable
when kids do stuff, no matter how loud and brash they're trying to be, you can always tell there's this note of "i don't know if i should be doing any of this at all" going on under it, and nature tapes is like the goddamn antithesis of that
i don't know the guy to psychoanalyze him but my first thought was "this dude had a revelation about what it means to own your Whole Thing"
but if really cool wig shattered my preconceptions of him, two trucks shattered my preconceptions. all of them. all of reality. it rewrote everything i knew to be true
i don't even know how to do math anymore and i sleep under a bridge voluntarily because i can't trust houses now
