Maybe you’ve heard that despite Trump’s promises on the campaign trail, manufacturers have closed plants and cut jobs from Missouri and Wisconsin to Georgia and Louisiana.
Among those was GM’s Lordstown, OH plant, which shut down last month — after Trump’s tax plan gave the company a giant tax cut and incentives to move jobs overseas.
But the Trump administration also proposed screwing over those workers even more by cutting funds to National Dislocated Worker Grants, which help laid-off workers get back on their feet.
Trump’s budgets for FY18 and FY19 both proposed cutting funding for these grants, hanging laid-off workers out to dry.
In Lordstown, where nearly 1,700 workers were affected by layoffs, a $1.75 million grant is funding a transition center near the plant and providing career services to affected workers.
One worker, who was laid off the day before his daughter’s fifth birthday, used the transition center to map out his post-GM career.
But according to talking points prepared by the Department of Labor — released to us after a FOIA request, and being made public here for the first time — these vital programs are “duplicative,” and workers would be “better serve[d]” if they were cut.
If the Trump administration had its way, workers who spent years or decades at GM’s Lordstown plant would be even worse off.
