Today in no-this-is-real-not-actually-a-dystopian-fiction: "A new policy proposal by the Trump administration calls for the surveillance of disabled people’s social media profiles to determine the necessity of their disability benefits." [THREAD] forbes.com/sites/imanibar…
There are so many unsettling things about this that it's hard to know where to start. Maybe with the basic premise that people with disabilities deserve to be SURVEILLED to make sure they're disabled enough. Not having too much fun, I guess.
Also, who is making decisions about what people with disabilities should be able or not able to do? Are we checking to see if they're too happy? Not suffering enough? Because, as we all know, we're all totally honest about our lives on social media.
The only thing worse is if it's algorithmic monitoring. I mean, I've seen computer vision-based captioning label a photo of Hilary Clinton as "a man riding a skateboard at night." Let's hope they don't think someone with a disability is writing a skateboard, heaven forbid.
There's also one heck of a terrifying slippery slope here. Do your tweets accurately reflect your mental health condition? Are people applying for student loan forgiveness doing enough good deeds? Are people on welfare instagramming photos of expensive purses or whatever? uuuugh.
