RIGHT WITH THE UNIVERSE, WRONG WITH YOU

a twitter thread
I was recently captivated by a twitter thread about parking in Koreatown
As I watched this situation play out in real time, I couldn’t help but feel like it was a parable about me. How I’m so hell-bent on being correct that I don’t care who I hurt in my quest to prove it
Some people can’t stop until they see justice, some can’t sleep without reconciliation.

I can’t rest until I’m correct
The Koreatown parking story is funny. It’s satisfying to find ourselves in these drivers who are acting out the kind of cosmic justice we wish we could all have
But I couldn’t stop myself from thinking about the people they hurt in the process. I can only imagine the text messages
4:30 — looking for parking
4:34 — found a spot, just waiting for this jerk to get out of the way
4:35 — yeah it’s definitely my spot. I’m gonna wait it out
4:44 — still waiting. You can order without me
4:45 — yeah I know I could find another spot, but I’m committed
5:00 — i actually like it better cold anyways
5:42 — finally got my spot!
5:43 — you left????
I see myself in this story, raging to be proven right, while I dismiss and blow off people who actually care about me in the process. The sad thing is, I’m usually raging directly at the person who cares about me
Compared to compassion, correctness is void of virtue. No one ever built a happy life inside a bunker of logic. Humans are messy, and kindness is king
Sure, I might get my parking spot in the end, but can I ever say it was worth it? Maybe I prove my point, but in doing so told the people around me that they’re not as important as my need to be right
This isn’t even about learning to be wrong, but learning to care about people more than points. Who cares who was right in the end? Maybe I was, after all. But I should probably just step away from the fight and get to dinner
If I’m right with the universe, but completely wrong with you, I’m worse off than when we started
