I just finished #HOMECOMING & I am floored. The love we all said she had for us, the inspiration we felt & wanted to believe she intended for us to feel was her vision from the start. Beyoncé is the GOAT.
hen I originally watched the #Beychella I posted to Facebook: “Watching Beyoncé’s Coachella performance and literally weeping. She is the greatest performer of our time if not of all time. This is art rooted in black culture, rooted in a love for blackness and black people...
My love for her is unshakeable. Her work viscerally encourages me to be a bad ass bitch, a money-earning, hustling diva, to go hard and slay in whatever I do, to be unafraid of success and unbothered by the haters. Nothing and no one is perfect, but...
Beyoncé continually raises her own bar in terms of the power, nuance, and caliber of her work (music, performances and social engagement). We are watching her grow and soar. Not everyone can be a superstar. Not everyone wants to be. It takes hard work and dedication and sacrifice
but you better believe I’m trying to be the Beyoncé of black disability studies. Yup. I said it and I ain’t sorry”
I took that energy into my book tour & I went hard for an entire year, regularly using Beyoncé, @JanelleMonae & other black women artists’ music to keep me pushing hard, writing half of my second book while promoting the first.
Watching #Homecoming, and seeing the work, the drive, the passion, the sacrifice & the dedication Beyoncé put into that show made me feel like her drive in her art had truly given me some of my own drive. It made me appreciate how much I’ve pushed myself this past year.
This film & album also made me appreciate her as a business woman. She took a live performance at a rich while music festival & made sure we got live-streaming access, a film to re-watch it over and over, and an album to hear it over & over.
She is going to make bank upon bank for this project after putting in massive amounts of time, money & work. She deserves every penny. She is a spectacular artist & a badass boss. If you can’t appreciate her shine, I truly think something is broken in your soul.
