As a Gender & Women’s Studies and Disability Studies professor, I often get students sharing deeply personal things with me, sometimes looking for guidance or support. I do my best in those moments to be as compassionate, honest & caring as I can be.
Afterward, I’m never sure if I said the right thing or did enough. But tonight I got an email that made clear that in at least one case recently, I did. This student had been on my mind several since we talked so I was relieved to hear they are doing ok.
If all I can do is make the hard parts of life a little bit easier on my students by being a real human with them, by giving them a little assurance & confidence to make good choices for themselves, then that makes me pretty happy.
