New WTO ruling: the way China manages tariff quotas (low/zero duty on limited imports) on farm products violates WTO rules — the process fails to be transparent, predictable and fair, and could impede trade.

The panel ruling is the first stage of a dispute. It's unclear whether China and the US want to, or are going to be able to appeal the findings.

The vote against Tories & Labour may ➡️2 different/overlapping frustrations about Brexit:

1. Brexit hasn’t happened—mainly among committed Brexiters
2. Politicians are making a mess of it—including from people who don’t have strong feelings either way, just want to move on

2/10 Venn diagram. 1. Betrayal - Brexit isn't happening. 2. Incompetence - Politicians are messing about. Partial overlap of 1 and 2
It’s important to distinguish between the two. Type 2 frustration (impatience about incompetence) says nothing about the kind of Brexit and could even be remedied with “Remain” or any form of soft Brexit so long as it was decisive.

This tweet has generated some comment about government-owned railway services in the EU.

Those comments may be right, but they miss the point that EU rules affecting the ownership of rail services are not part of the EU customs union

It's very basic but seems to need to be clarified.

A UK-EU customs union would not be NOT the same as the EU single market. (It's not even the same as the EU customs union).

It wouldn't get into ownership of public services.

I'm pleased that the murals in the WTO building get an airing. The film is worth watching but the tone is annoying. Yes, when the General Agreement on Tariffs & Trade (GATT) took over the building the old murals from the International Labour Organization were covered up. But

First a group of WTO and ILO volunteers learnt about the murals. They persuaded the WTO's management to remove the panels covering them and restore damaged work. I know. Some were close colleagues, and one is even glimpsed in the film. The WTO did it.

Debunking WTO, and what "trading on WTO terms" really means...

As EU members, we participate in over 750 international treaties.

Many relate to trade, enabling us to trade freely with the EU, the EEA, and 40+ other countries. 1/26
Other treaties cover non-trade issues, from air worthiness certificates to drivers licenses, UK and EU citizens’ rights, food safety, environmental protections, workers rights, etc. 2/26
On Brexit Day, we leave the EU. That means we lose all the benefits of its treaties. The treaties are gone in a flash, as if we’d fed them into a shredder. (That’s not the EU being vindictive, it’s just how the Article 50 process works.) Even *if* we have a transition period 3/26

A senior administration officials says @POTUS wants duties increased from 10% to 25% t on #China products due to that country’s unfair trading practices. "We gave them many, many opportunities over a year to address our concerns...we have obviously not seen movement from them."
