Delighted to see this thread on the work of feminist sociologist Fatima Mernissi. Especially thrilled that the name of the account is Gender Jihadist, a reference I’m assuming to the brilliant Amina Wadud’s Inside the Gender Jihad: Women’s Reform in Islam. Both women my heroes.
We stand on the shoulders of so many whose work liberated our imaginations and told us we deserve to be free. In my first book, Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution, I mention many feminists of Mideast and/or Muslim descent who taught me so much.
I wrote about Fatima Mernissi, Amina Dawud, Leila Ahmed, Nawal El Saadawi, Doris Shafik, Huda Shaarawi, Muslim women poets from the 7th-12th century. I also write about contemporary feminists and activists across the region whose work is pivotal to freeing us all.
