@maggieNYT is her own special #freakshow. Reads that #Edelweiss was playing at the #WH, sees Nazis in the woodwork. #Edelweiss, the SHOW TUNE, did not exist during the lifetime of #AdolfHitler or of the #ThirdReich.

It was written by the hit machine team of Rodgers and Hammerstein, for their 1958 Broadway smash hit, "The Sound of Music."

The #SOM loosely rendered the story of the meeting and marriage of the Von Trapps, and their escape from the Third Reich's annexation of Switzerland via the Anschluss.

#Edelweiss is sung twice in the movie. First, when Baron von Trapp finds the heart of his love for his children when he returns to the family estate with his new "lady friend." That gripping moment touches my dad heart because it reminds me of the blessing my children are to me.

The second time the song is sung, #ChristopherPlummer sings it as his family escapes the clutches of the National Socialists, who've demanded that he serve the Third Reich in its Navy.

It serves -- a decade after WWII -- as a powerful tribute to independence, rejection of socialist demands on the labors and liberties of others.
