As Indigenous organisations we need to be smarter about relying purely on self identification. Pretendians have always been a thing. Now they're weaponizing language about decolonization and victims of colonial policies intended to disrupt relationships.
As urban communities we accept people at face value, validating their bullshit stories of vague ancestry and telling them that being Indigenous is a feeling in their heart.

I like allies. I like people joining with us. Come to the powwow. Come to drumming. Heck. Come to the language class.
But you don't need some vague ancestor from a hundred years ago and no subsequent contract with community.
