I am getting tired of saying this. Nazis were not socialists. Even if it was a word in their name. They used a name that would reassure people. 1/10 #cdnpoli
After all, they could hardly have called themselves the Hateful Genocidal Monsters Party, now could they? No one would have voted for them. 2/10
And that is the thing. They were the duly elected government. Which goes to show, the public can be wrong. The public can be foolish and gullible and misled. 3/10
It's like using a slogan like "For The People". It's what some political parties sometimes do to get votes, even when their real goals and plans will be very bad for a lot of the people. 4/10
The people of Germany elected the Nazis. They didn't know what was coming. They didn't recognize the psychopathic rage of Hitler, and they began to be caught up in it. Propaganda can be very effective in making people think a certain way. 5/10
People become invested in an ideology, the slogans become their mantra. Slogans not unlike "Make America Great Again". Or, "Take Back Alberta". Comforting strong patriotic-sounding slogans. 6/10
If news organizations are complacent about fact-checking, there is no one to cut through the propagandic haze to illuminate facts and truths. More and more people accept the lies. After all, no one (except those who are the OTHER) is telling them any different. 7/10
Things become normalized. Things that would have been unacceptable in the past barely raise an eyebrow. The leaders can say anything, do anything, because the public has become indoctrinated or disengaged. People say & do cruel things that would not have been tolerated b4. 8/10
Then it gets to a point where is no outcry anymore. Those who see the rot and the evil in the government's actions; they are not believed, they are mocked, they are suppressed. A whole machinery has been built up to silence them. 9/10
Fortunately, we have the lessons of history to protect us from repeating such terrible tragic mistakes. Oh, wait. We are living in a society where people are convinced Nazis were socialists. I fear we are further down the road than we realise. 10/10
