🤓 for those trying to combat 🐴💩 about the need for opening up gas reserves in the NT, i give you these pointers:

1. we're using less gas for electricity generation that at any time in the past decade — even as variable renewables have grown from 2% to 12%.
2. AEMO, the energy market operator, doesn't think we're going to use more gas as the energy transition continues:
3. we don't have a gas shortage — we just choose to export the vast bulk offshore.

…which would be nice if it didn't have huge carbon impacts *and* if there were significant royalties and taxes paid and/or profits were kept in australian hands.
4. developing gas fields will not reduce energy prices so long as we are linked to international gas markets — that ship (so to speak) sailed long ago.
5. don't let anyone tell you gas has significantly lower emissions than coal, until they can show you evidence of the full lifecycle greenhouse impact of gas.

fugitive emissions of methane are ~28x more potent than CO₂ & australia's methodology for accounting is deeply flawed.
6. the LNG sector is fastest growing contributor to 🇦🇺's emissions & is fighting with all their might to continue to pollute at our expense.

eg. @Chevron's gorgon & wheatstone LNG projects emit up to 17Mtpa CO₂ for free. meanwhile @LiberalAus want you to pay $2bn to abate 1/2.
