Many of the actions Trump took that look most clearly chargeable as obstruction crimes were efforts to block an obstruction investigation into prior acts (Comey stuff) that, ironically, the special counsel report suggests fell short of chargeable offenses. nytimes.com/2019/04/23/us/…
Most of the worst things Trump did stemmed from his freakout in July 2017 when he learned Mueller was investigating him for obstruction: trying to gut Mueller's jurisdiction, trying to fire Mueller, and later trying to get McGahn to falsify evidence about the firing attempt.
The implication is that if Trump had just stood down and let Mueller look at the "pressuring Comey over Flynn" and "firing Comey" episodes without attempting to stop him, he would have been fine on obstruction. (Exception: his unrelated efforts to keep Manafort from cooperating.)
