A thread on Omar Barghouti, his recent @nytimes letter and the #BDS movement. To explain why media outlets should only publish pro-BDS statements with a fake news symbol or a health warning.
Omar Barghouti fronts BDS - the boycott movement against Israel. BDS fills the debate with nice sounding keywords & utopian ideas. This is not new. The bloodiest movements in history were all accompanied by aggressive PR campaigns that tried to make themselves look pretty.
But supporting BDS is like promoting a 'flat earth' ideology. BDS has no example it can call on - none - to support itself. Israel is the only free nation in the region - it should be emulated - not ripped apart. If Israel was an Arab state - they'd hold it aloft with pride.
Each time the Jews were offered statehood, they jumped at the opportunity- building a state even before they had one. Everything the Jews did was designed to create a piece of land where they could finally enjoy self determination
The Arab strategy has been the opposite. They have *always* turned down everything offered to them. Never once has statehood and freedom for the Arabs been more attractive than continuing a struggle to destroy Israel
They call BDS 'peaceful resistance'. But like the Nazi boycott of Jewish business, BDS is not a stand alone strategy. It is accompanied by forms of violent resistance - such as terror attacks. Like the Nazis, the Arabs use these boycotts as a way of alienating the Jews
If the Arabs were serious. They'd have taken the peace offers presented to them. Grabbed statehood and freedom and then worked towards improving their own lives - educating and protecting their own children. Instead they prefer perpetual conflict.
For Barghouti to talk about diversity and civil rights is obscene. In every place under Palestinian rule - minority groups are oppressed, press freedom is unheard of - and those not conforming to cultural norms may find themselves thrown from the roof of a nearby building
The Arabs do not want to put in the hard work of building their state. Surrounded by failed Arab nations, Israel acts as a constant reminder of their own failures, their own inability. And the more successful Israel is - the higher their anger rises.
If there was no Israel. If everyone in the ME was abused the same, wherever they lived - there would be no boycott movement. The boycott movement only exists because in one place - and the fact it is Jewish is crucial - all the citizens are treated equally.
BDS lies, it deceives and if successful would present a serious threat to millions of Jewish lives. It pretends it is about 'the occupation' - but only one of the three aims have anything to do with post 1967 politics. The other two attack Israel's right to exist at all.
If media outlets seek to give BDS any column inches at all - they have a responisbility to their readers to remind them of the truth. That Israel is a Jewish state, a democratic oasis in the despotic desert - and BDS is just another Arab attempt to destroy it.
