Why wouldn’t Labour commit to this and a charter in its election manifesto? It’s so
perfect for them /1
Labour could show it has a truly transformative social agenda by committing to bring s1 of the Equality Act 2010 into force and commit to a UK charter for socio-economic rights /2 (rightsinfo.org/inequality-is-…)
What would a social rights charter look like? Conveniently someone just wrote one! Check it out - right to work, to social security, to vocational training, health... this is a recipe for poverty reduction and social mobility. What’s not to love? /3 research.ncl.ac.uk/article22/cons… /3
These reforms would bring us closer to a multi-Parliament ‘lock’ on the govt the protecting basic socio-economic needs so reducing chance that a Tory govt would roll austerity back in in 5 years /4
A charter for social-economic rights would force governments to confront the social and economic consequences of policies, knowing that if they fail to prioritise eg poverty and inequality reduction the policy will be challenged in the courts /5
At the moment, we have the Human Rights Act which is incredibly important but focusses on civil and political rights - privacy, free speech, right to life. It’s a blunt instrument when it comes to preventing poverty and inequality /6
I would love to see some serious consideration given to this by the Labour Shadow Cabinet. If Brexit happens then there are far less constraints on future govts on rights so we have a perfect opportunity to remake our constitution in the interests of the people /7
