When I joined the Clinton Admin in 1993, the idea of centrism was that we were open to what was best that was traditionally associated with either party--Democratic social justice, GOP fiscal responsibility or strong defense. What has changed?
What has changed is that the modern GOP has nothing to offer, nothing to embrace. They have rejected fiscal responsibility. They have rejected sensible defense. They have rejected Nixon's efforts to show concern for the environment or Bush's moderate views on immigration.
They have embraced corruption and deceit. They have embraced obstruction and contempt for the rule of law. They are gutting the government and eviscerating international institutions and alliances. What may have been good or admirable or even defensible is gone.
Today, centrism is about being a Democratic centrist, about trying to find common ground between the social activism and efforts toward economic justice of the left and the growth oriented polices and international engagement of more mainstream elements of the party.
The future of American politics lies for now...barring some major reset and reinvention...entirely within the Democratic Party. Fortunately, the range of views within the party is healthy and the vibrant debate can lead us in a very good direction...
...away from Trump and Trumpism, away from inequality and economic anxiety, away from isolation and toward a restoration of faith in our institutions and re-establishment of American leadership in the world.
