As to the 'concessions':

🔥 Regulatory alignment in goods was what May wanted

🔥 Her (imminent) successor can ditch the promise to mirror workers' rights

🔥 We have a Customs Union until (at least) May '21 anyway

Labour can't sell out for this? What happened to the six tests?
🔥 Regulatory alignment on goods does nothing for services

🔥 Mirroring workers' rights replaces a for-all-time guarantee with a reversible undertaking

🔥 There is, at absolutely most, one extra year's protection for British jobs.

Why bail out the Tories for this?
Was Barry Gardiner right after all when he described Labour's six tests as "bollocks" and Corbyn wrong to say Labour had a "strategy of holding the government to account on the tests that have been put forward"?

He's pressing the right buttons about the dangers of populism - but it's rather bloodless. To win the right to be heard, One Nation Tories must reflect more honestly on how we got here. If they don't, they sound too much like vigorous defenders of the status quo. #GaukePopulism

Once 'Britain's richest man' but a tax dodger and fracker who supported Brexit then pissed off to Monaco: a true patriot. Now given favourable publicity by the BBC for his vanity boondoggles paid for out of money that might otherwise have funded our schools and hospitals.
It's worth reading the replies from @danroan who, admirably, explains his stance.
Also worth noting that, as @danroan has pointed out, he has addressed this difficult stuff with Ratcliffe in other tweets. I'd treat it differently but it was unfair of me implicitly to criticise Dan's reporting.

The Remain Parties gain 867 seats, the Leave Parties lose 1526 seats and Jeremy Corbyn says it shows the need to Leave. Extraordinary.

Any Remainers still contemplating voting Labour in the European Elections take note.

Remarkable one might still be surprised by Corbyn. But for Labour to "bail out" a flagship Tory policy, one unpopular on the ground, vigorously opposed by Labour members, detrimental to the economic security of working people, and which will damage public finances is staggering.

A thread on GATT Article 24 and the proposed Brexit options, since it’s likely to be mentioned.

It’s not just “Malthouse Plan B”. At least 10 of the 16 options have to comply with GATT Article 24

1/ Another customs thread. This time on #customs formalities and #Backstop . Backstop envisages a #customsunion with simplifications. It mentions that a movement certificate, A.UK, will be required. No mention of customs declarations.
2/ Movement certificate demonstrates that goods are eligible for trade under a customs union. Is certified by e.g. a Chamber of Commerce. Declarations do more than that. They are entered into the national customs system and enable customs authorities to collect customs data.
3/ Much more info on a declaration than on a movement cert. Some of the most important fields include commodity code, value of goods, country of origin and customs procedure. Would imagine the UK would still like to collect this data for various reasons even under backstop.

Under different Brexit scenarios there will be different customs formalities and supporting documentation traders will need to complete/ provide for customs clearance (from an upcoming blogpost): /2
This is a simplified view - additional formalities are required depending on the type of goods (e.g. agricultural, excise) and other supporting documentation may be needed (e.g. licenses, certificates, value declaration, insurance docs, tariff quota docs etc). /3

What a kicking "Chequers" is getting
Worth stepping back and asking why, how it survived and lives (even if it seems to be in a persistent vegetative state)
It has been a close thing. Barnier/Commission (Selmayr) tried to politically kill it off before the cabinet even agreed it and then in the immediate days after it it came out
He miscalculated by overstating and caricaturing UK position in the initial stage but…
But… by last week in July into August the UK was very concerned that Chequers would be killed off

First point is this speech is a plague on both houses - remainers and brexiteers - and a call for analysis based on what is possible, not on wishful thinking.

That will always lead to charges of 'defeatism', but while Rogers may be an Eeyore, he knows too much to be ignored /2
