If you asked me: "which industry presents the greatest environmental threat, oil or media?", I would say "the media". Every day it misdirects us. Every day it tells us that issues of mind-numbing irrelevance are more important than the collapse of our life support systems.
The media is the enabler and - as most outlets campaign fiercely against regulation - enforcer of environmental destruction. It stands guard against anyone seeking to defend the living planet against the ravages of capitalism.
I'm often told "newspapers give us the stories we want to read". It would be more accurate to say "the billionaires who own newspapers give us the stories they want us to read. They constantly influence our perceptions of what is relevant".
