First day of #io19 is a wrap. So many awesome highlights, but if I had to choose just one amongst many..

Googlebot running latest Chromium and now also on the evergreen track (blog post @ bit.ly/2VmhD2J) takes the cake. Not only is it a huge win for web developers...
no more transpiling of ES6 and thousands of web features that no longer require polyfilling or other gnarly workarounds, but also a huge win for the end users, who can now enjoy faster and more optimized experiences — many sites shipped same transpiled code to everyone...
and, a huge kudos to all the folks behind the scenes, both on the Chrome and Search side, that made it all possible. A long and multi-year journey that required deep architectural work in Chromium, layers upon layers of optimizations (scheduling, rendering, ...), and...
an incredible amount of work to integrate and make it all run at (literal) web scale for Search rendering — turns out, "rendering the web" is no small feat. And, they pulled it all off with a seamless transition. It didn't "just" go live, it's been humming along for a while...
tl;dr: a huge upgrade and step forward for the web; web developers rejoice; and we all benefit as well.

Pretty good start for #io19. :-)

The assumption of normality in many statistical models refers to the model residuals and not the dependent variable. @oscar_olvera100 has a great post about this topic (linked). I tried to expand on his thoughts through some additional simulation/visualization. #epitwitter 1/n
In these examples, we’ll look at a simple linear model Y ~ X, where X is dichotomous and Y is continuous. This first plot shows, for two relative effect sizes, the distributions of:

1. Y stratified by X
2. Y without stratification
3. Residuals from the linear model Y ~ X

We can "test" the normality assumption using the Shapiro-Wilk test. We find that if we look at only the dependent variable, the normality assumption is "violated" (SW p < 0.05) when the effect size is large (Cohen's d = 2), but not for smaller effect sizes (Cohen's d = 0.75). 3/n
