Great Britain has just gone a whole week without using coal to generate electricity | @drsimevans @tomoprater bit.ly/304amDj
That's the equivalent of 47 days – or one third of all hours in the year so far.
Coal now supplies less than 5% of the electricity generated in the UK.
It was 40% as recently as 2012.

* This coal-free run is expected to last until at least Thu evening, acc @enappsys
* It applies to generation in GB only. Northern Ireland is part of all-Ireland 'single electricity market'
* UK imports from FR, NL & BE, which all use some coal to generate electricity
The Netherlands and France both still use the fuel to generate power (and the continental grid is highly interconnected, linking to others such as Germany).
