Here's the thing I don't understand about Never Trump conservatives like Bret Stephens. Trump says "I'm gonna do a Banana Republic thing" and Bret's like "meh, he doesn't really mean it." A college student says something brash and Bret says "OMG, they're gonna guillotine me!"
In the 1st instance, the person in question is the President of the world's most heavily armed nation. In the 2nd instance, it is a 1st generation college student w/ a homemade sign and 561 Twitter followers. But it's really that college student who poses the totalitarian threat.
Ok, I just have one more thing to say about this. Rigid dogmatism & closed-mindedness are bad. Every dogmatic leftist I knew in college has evolved in their politics. Most dogmatic conservatives I knew in college (like Bret?) have exactly the same politics they did 30 years ago.

This milkshake/Farage episode got me thinking about the American Revolution, tarring & feathering, and the messy ways in which communities establish boundaries of acceptable political speech. Here's a thread on that topic, inspired by the Northam episode.
tl;dr. Throwing a milkshake is a political act, just as tarring and feathering was. It's also illegal. It's also fairly harmless. Engaging in politics outside the formal halls of political power is complicated. Here's that thread in a more readable form. threadreaderapp.com/thread/1091708…
And BTW, it's worth noting that Northam did NOT resign. Crowd actions (like tarring and feathering in the 18th century or Twitter mobs in the 21st) often do not bring about the change they seek. The mechanisms of change are complicated and unpredictable.

3. In response to a question noting how Reagan deployed racially coded language about welfare cheats and "big strapping bucks," Sears says Reagan was more naive than racist. He just said what worked, and Sears himself claims to have abhorred such language.

Oh, and also, our isolationist President who is a strong believer in national sovereignty says that we may need to wipe a country comprised of 80 million people off the map. You know, just as an isolationist who believes in sovereignty would do.
But in all seriousness, let's just pause for a second to note how bonkers it is that the President of the US is giving granular editorial advice to the television news station that already slavishly echoes his administration's talking points.

Here is what I am struggling to understand about Brexit: The Conservatives are risking what are supposed to be core commitments - the union and supporting British businesses. Why have they found it so easy to do this? [Thread]
One way of seeing the risk to the union is that pro-Brexit Tories are retreating from British to English nationalism. The risk to the economy has been explained as part of an attempt to turn England/UK into a deregulated offshore annex to US.
While these explanations do hold water, I don't think they are sufficient on their own. What seems to be happening is that for a hardcore of the right, Brexit is becoming a goal towards which everything can be sacrificed, yet simultaneously evacuated of meaning.

A beautiful woman who has sacrificed so much for this nation.

And yet I struggle to see how Jack or Bobby Kennedy would embrace immigration policies that didn’t insist on both compassion for illegals with a firm commitment to sending people home who broke our laws to get here.
Still, I understand the outrage. #Trump is giving illegals two choices:

1) Give up asylum claim, get your kids back, be deported immediately.

2) Claim asylum, stay jailed for 1+ yr, won’t see your kids.

Listen up kids. So when #Trump wants to replace #SNAP benefits with a box of prepackaged dry goods, it’s not just about #fruits and #veggies. It’s about power, race, ethnicity, labor, energy, disability, and language as well.
2) What people eat and what people are supposed to eat and what people had access to eat has always been informed by power. In ancient times, it may have been the nobility eating meat and wheat bread while peasants ate potages. Nowadays, it’s what people should not eat.
3) Just because people are poor does not mean that they do not have their own food preferences, ideas about food, or habits around food. Folks who use SNAP/#foodstamps will use their benefits, as they are able, to buy the food they can afford within these frameworks.
