Please stop insinuating that we are 'lazy parents' who want to be 'absent from the lives of the children'. I find that very insulting.

Most of the parents I know are very involved both in the education and other aspects of their kids lives.
The calls, messages, WhatsApp texts, emails & DMs I get - parents asking for book recommendations, activities that they can involve their children in, interests in writing and the arts that they are trying to nurture, complaining why @timeoutKE events are not regular enough 1/2
2/2 and even giving suggestions of other activities my team can incorporate. Where I can, I direct them where their needs can be better addressed. And by the way, majority of the parents who come with their children for #TimeOutKE do not learn in international schools.
They are just regular parents who want the best for their children. So they come and spend 3+ hours sharing stories, doing crafts, dancing, meeting authors, learning about reptiles, participating in mock bird ringing facilitated by experts, all this OUT OF THEIR OWN VOLITION!
Can I expect them to do this every Saturday? That would be laughable. Even being in the industry, I have been unable to manage consistent dance exposure for my girl yet I know how much she enjoys it. Because I am a parent, and my JD is so vast parliamentarians have nothing on me.
And bills need to be sorted as well. Don't even get me started on the tasks that cannot even be equated in monetary terms.

Are there good things in this #competencybasedcurriculum ? YES!
Are there are good things about the curriculum? YES!
You should have seen how elated I was last December when a parent showed me their holiday work - plant a seed, watch it grow, record the process. I know some of our kids have no idea how maize grows :-)
Example 2: Going shopping with the child and allowing them to calculate how much the shopping costs and pay - mathematical concepts right there (and they also learn that money does not grow on trees :-)

And learn about priorities - needs are infinite while money is not....
Active participation of parents in the learning process is a good thing and should always be encouraged. But making it mandatory and an integral part of the assessment is where the inequality sneaks in.

My suggestions?
My suggestions?
1. Those projects and portfolios, give us that as assignments over the holidays as opposed to giving the children tonnes of homework that they must complete before opening day. I am sure most parents would appreciate this.

Suggestion 2: Give parents options. Where they don't have the know-how, let the CBC implementers have a way of filling this void. What % is going to afford the portfolio, the COLOUR printing, buying newspapers and magazines to cut from, internet to research & download stuff?
We are playing 'Mtelezo'. My track faces down- I'm also carrying a Jerry can of water to wet it when need be. Yours faces uphill and so dry that the Sahara has nothing on it. Yet, the winner is - whoever slides to their finishing line fastest. How now? #competencybasedcurriculum
