Today is my wife's last day teaching 1st grade, so I went to her class and talked about space. At the end of Q&A, Gigi asked for one last question. One of the children said, "YOU ask a question Mrs. Metzger!" She declined because she can ask me questions any time, but.../1
2/...the students spontaneously broke into a chant, "ASK A QUESTION!... ASK A QUESTION!... ASK A QUESTION!..." Lol! She did, and after I answered then Gigi's classroom assistant told the kids to give her a hug since it was her last day, and they mobbed her in a giant group hug.
3/ ...What an awesome way to end! I'm glad I got to be there for her last day. (Gigi is actually going to teach math for one year and then is going to only do speech language pathology and run marathons after that.)
4/4 BTW, Gigi's question mirrored several of the student's. They all want to know about Pluto being a planet. 😅

Here's a perspective on satellite mega-constellations that nobody has mentioned. (We are ALL tired of this, but I think this is interesting).

The real reason SpaceX is putting up a mega-constellation at this time is because of the laws of nature. It was inevitable.../1
2/ Many metrics of information growth show exponential growth. Examples: Moore's law, computer speeds, agents on the internet of things, sensors. See review here: ourworldindata.org/technological-…
3/ Even before humans existed, we see evidence of exponential growth in information. Consider the sizes of genomes. This plot has a slope of 1 on a log-lot chart, so this is exponential growth in DNA complexity. phys.org/news/2013-04-l…

Some perspective on @SpaceX #Starlink’s planned 12,000 satellite constellation. I agree for the long term we need to address visible sky pollution. This is just a tiny fraction of what will be put into space this century. But TBH, I don’t think it is a big deal yet.../1
2/ I am willing to be proven wrong, but some quick calculations show that bats already block about 200,000 times more of the sky than these satellites will. Also birds, clouds, etc, & there are already 4000 sats in orbit + 20k-400k pcs of spacejunk. So it’s not a VAST increase.
3/ There are 100,000 aircraft flights per day, many of these at night. In my typical evening outside, I see far more aircraft lights in the sky than spacecraft. I don’t believe the modest increase in spacecraft that Starlink provides will overturn this...though the day will come.

.@philipcball: all the people with whom I work developing space technology are convinced, and are performing peer-reviewed science and engineering studies that show, thriving beyond Earth isn’t fantasy and is coming soon. Failure to grasp it could undermine the best outcome...1/3
2/3...but won’t stop it because the technological barriers are dropping fast. The best outcome is to have all humanity engaged & participating in space. Pieces like this are hurtful because it draws the public away from what the experts are all saying is true, hurting the public.
3/3 If you want to make claims that go against a large body of experts in a field, you need to find a large body of other experts in that field who provide real data and arguments to prove your claims, including published research. In this case it doesn’t exist, so you can’t.
