Given the PM has resigned over the failure of Brexit negotiations, it should be fabulous timing that the most comprehensive first-draft history yet written should also just have been published. Absolute must-read for everyone involved in Brexit from whatever angle.
There is so much material here it takes some time to digest but 2 points in particular struck me - the last words from the conclusion below, and that we went into the negotiation without matching the Commission's team - we have no direct counterparts to Barnier and Weyand
It is worth considering whether any Conservative leadership candidates have read this. Stewart and Gove perhaps, I doubt any of the others. He's not standing but this from Liam Fox sums up the ignorance and arrogance of too many wanting to be leader
The media also has to have read about what happened and be ready to challenge, there have been too many easy rides, not challenging that the EU will not be backing down over Ireland. There's a short reality check from within the Cabinet here...
Of course candidates don't need to read everything if they have good advisors, but are their teams advisors or partisans? We regularly see in the papers inaccurate analysis, such as this in today's Sunday Times, spreading the view that if only x...
So far we've seen precisely no new thinking and little honesty on Brexit from those who would find their premiership initially dominated by the issue. This is what should be demanded of all the candidates, and they should have teams to think it through.
Ideally candidates move beyond Brexit to a future vision. But you have to deal first with the present, a tough negotiating partner, no public or Parliamentary majority, economic risks, business frsutration, and time running out. Let's hear about that. /end linkedin.com/pulse/brexit-t…
PS Immediately... did Raab get asked seriously about this? About international negotiations which went better after one side threatened to pull out? Because I can't offhand recall any, and more importantly I don't suppose he can either.
