It seems that without sleep even @anandMenon1 is not quite his optimistic self. I actually disagree with him in some regards. Don‘t worry - not because I am an optimist (thread)
@anandMenon1 My first concern is the interpretation of the success of the Brexit party. It won the election, but I am not sure about a standing start. It is no surprise that its rise coincides with UKIP‘s fall - after all the only recognisable UKIP face is now the Brexit party‘s face.
Be that as it may - I share the view that this election confirmed a fundamental split - and don‘t see how Parliament can get us through it. And here I regard no deal as far more likely than @anandMenon1
@anandMenon1 Largely because no-deal will happen by default. Parliament will need to act to prevent it - and Parliament is as split as the population. Anand argues that the Conservative MPs would, in extremis, bring down their own government to prevent it, but...
... the issue with a default rule is: when would they do it? July? August? September? October? And what then? It might be too late for anything but asking for an extension. And the once-certainty that it would be granted is decreasing.
In a way leaving the EU has now become similar to staying in the EU in the past. There were loud voices against it, but they would need to accumulate a political critical mass to do something about it.
