How would a Brexit acknowledging tradeoffs have worked? Question 1 - all U.K.: compulsory alignment and less trade friction or trade friction, no alignment (1/2)
Question 2: If all U.K. is not CU+SM, the question for NI is: stay in SM+CU, diverge from GB, no border OR closer to GB, but border. Decided by referendum in NI (2/2)
I know this is tough, indeed outright brutal. But ‘we pretend not to have a problem and if that doesn’t work we pretend to have a solution’ is more of a short-term approach (3/2, ok, sue me)

Another popular US ask in FTAs concerns medicine pricing. The US position is: we pay too much for drugs, financing their R&D - and you don’t pay enough. If memory serves Trump has repeated that position.
But beyond POTUS and the US ambassador speaking about FTAs - the USTR, the US agency in charge of negotiating FTAs, has included an item concerning this into the negotiating goals. Here it is.

Let‘s take a moment and look at one of the examples of the benefits of a US-UK FTA that @ShankerASingham mentions: government procurement. (Thread)
@ShankerASingham There is the WTO level of government procurement commitments - the GPA and the revised GPA. Not every WTO Member is a party to these, but the US is and the UK will be in its own right. That would be the non-FTA baseline. If you want.
@ShankerASingham But the statement is correct that this leaves much to be desired. The US has its protective Buy America programmes. And worse: It‘s federal structure means that much of the procurement happens on state level. And how do you get access to that?

@FerdiGiugliano Ask in Italy and it has long been widely acknowledged that Italy has punched far below its weight in the EU. This fits poorly with reality: 2 of 5 EU presidency are held by Italy: ECB and EP. The others are held by Luxemburg, Portugal and Poland.
@FerdiGiugliano And that’s not the end of it: Mogherini, another Italian, holds another of the absolute frontline top jobs.

As we all know, "it's the backstop, stupid" that is the problem.

But more specifically, how long the backstop lasts, and whether the UK can ever leave it.

Last week was a big step forward, with the EU tentatively agreeing to write an all-UK customs arrangement *into* the Withdrawal Agreement.

So not a promise to do this in the future, but an operable text that requires no subsequent additions to function. /3

1) Sir Ivan Rogers speech, a sobering & devastating speech from our former leading EU diplomat on #Brexit, its history and the UK position.

Should be read by *everyone* however I'll pull out a few key points in this thread

2) the UK already had the best deal of all EU member states. We may not have believed it but the other 27 nations did.
Anyone who thinks about this for more than 5 minutes would realise this
Cameron in fact managed to improve it further, but the press torpedoed his deal
3) the 4 freedoms are seen as indivisible by the EU27. Trucks & money having more rights to move than people is absolutely unacceptable to them. That's just a fact.
Anyone, Labour or Tory, who tells you we can get a great deal without free movement of people is lying to you

1/ A small thread on why BOTH many Remainers & Leavers still havent "got" that #Brexit has already failed...
....even if it goes ahead.
& why its often "media noise" rather than "actual lies" is obscuring this & the fact that Brexit wont happen as we thought it would 2 years ago.
2/ Basic Leave idea pre #Brexit vote was that a prosperous UK with large trade deficit eager to retain many European standards wld not really offer a threat to EU was not completely implausible as many remainers assumed.
But it depended on....
3/ Basic #Brexit idea was to convince EU that with a bit of compromise & British payments UK cld leave single mkt but retain full access to it while it worked out its future. Indeed many sensible Leavers didnt want radical change overnight..however there was one small problem....

U know that only CU/SM Convergence will prevent an Irish border & shield some of the econ but it's Pay & Obey No Say! Better to #Remain in the EU & Reform,
2. #Brexit tide's turned. 37% voters was never the Will. Far Right aren't interested in the Ppl & you've got Momentum snapping at yr heels. #Remain now has more real momentum than them...Time to Confirm the Will. Allow a Binding #FinalSay 2018 + #StopBrexit option or lose votes.
3. PS Oh & in backing any #Brexit you are wholly complicit with the Tory theft of our Rights as you can't guarantee they will be protected from any future Tory Govt...if you can't #StopBrexit yourselves give it back to us & we'll do it for you! #ConfirmTheWill!

1. Worst national leadership in my lifetime forcing through the most damaging, misguided & missold policy I can remember. Ideology & vested self interest replace statesmanship, soundbites replace sound judgement & autocracy subverts democracy.

2. A flawed Leave campaign based on lies, deceit, disingenuity & over simplification & a #Remain one fought w/o any positivity from the Govt & no real commitment from Labour, whose leader was virtually AWOL, did no justice to #Brexit complexity & betrayed our democratic process.
3. A mere 37% of voters/26.5% of the Ppl voted leave in a legally Non-Binding test of public opinion which has been corrupted, on the basis of an illegitimate political promise & interpreted as being the irrefutable Will of the Ppl.
The 1st is insufficient to claim the latter!
