We just received the banned books list from KDOC & it's unbelievable. Kansas has fewer than 10,000 prisoners, yet more than 7,000 books are banned for them, from "A Clockwork Orange" to "Are Prisons Obsolete?"

RT with the most absurd book you find! bookstoprisoners.net/wp-content/upl…
Some books banned for Kansas prisoners:

Cutting for Stone (@cuttingforstone)
The Pursuit of Happyness (@CEOofHappYness)
The Lovely Bones (AGAIN! Just like we found in New Hampshire @BookRiot)
Pretty much everything by @chuckpalahniuk
So many books by Neil Gaiman (@neilhimself)
More political/prison books banned for Kansas prisoners (hey, @PENamerican!):

The Autobiography of Malcolm X
Notes on Anarchism (@noamchomskyT)
Prison Legal News and Criminal Legal News (@prisonlegalnews)
Locked Up and other classic anarchism texts
Just Mercy (@eji_org)
This list was uncovered by @prisonlegalnews with help from @UW_iSchool students. Along with New Hampshire bans reported by @bookriot, these indicate disturbing ongoing censorship in prisons across the United States.

We need more lists: bookstoprisoners.net/banned-book-li… #PrisonersNeedBooks
Oh, and @PDog119 -- look at the sheer number of role-playing manuals on this list:

Rifts
Pathfinder
Star Wars
Dungeons & Dragons
More authors banned for all prisoners by Kansas DOC:

Michael Eric Dyson (@MichaelEDyson)
John Grisham (@JohnGrisham)
James Patterson (@JP_Books)
Wally Lamb (@WallyLambAuthor)
David Wong (@JohnDiesattheEn)
Danielle Steel (@daniellesteel)
David Baldacci (@davidbaldacci)
Even more authors banned for all prisoners by Kansas DOC:

J.D. Vance (@JDVance1)
Lisa Gardner (@LisaGardnerBks)
Charlaine Harris (@RealCharlaine)
Felicia Day (@feliciaday)

To be clear, these are authors we likely stock on our shelves, which we've sent to many other prisons.
Another book which the Kansas DOC bans for its 10,000 prisoners is "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" by Michelle McNamara (@pattonoswalt).

The 7,000+ book bans on this list are absolutely unjustifiable. They include cookbooks, drawing instruction, and classic novels. Who decided this?
They banned @nkjemisin 😭
If you're learning about prison book access, know that dozens of groups nationwide do amazing work to send free, used books to prisoners. Collectively, prison book programs send approximately 200,000 free books every year (whoa!).
