News: Michael Wolff, author of a new book on the Trump presidency, clarifies his assertion that Robert Mueller’s office drew up a “draft indictment” of the president. The special counsel denied the report from Wolff’s book “Siege.” Wolff now offers explanation to @NPR.
Was there a “draft indictment” of the president on three counts of obstruction of justice? Peter Carr, Mueller’s spokesman, told @johnson_carrie that “the document described does not exist.” Wolff now acknowledges that may be because of the way he described the document.
The author tells @npr he has a 56-page “memorandum of law,” which the special counsel’s office wrote to answer this question: IF we were indict the president, and IF the White House responds that a sitting president cannot be indicted, how do we answer that in court?
This “memorandum of law” described by Wolff sounds different than his book’s description of a “draft indictment.” Wolff says, “my characterization of it as a draft indictment” was because the memorandum of law listed certain hypothetical charges against the president.
In the @npr interview Wolff acknowledges that “it’s quite possible” the special counsel “responded accurately” in saying the document as Wolff first described it does not exist. But he insists he does have the 56-page legal memo. “This document exists,” he says.
Colleague @tamarakeithNPR will soon publish this and other news from our talk with Wolff; and you can hear our interview Monday on @MorningEdition.
