1. For some reason, I got to talking about my paternal grandfather this morning on @StandUpWithPete @PeteDominick. Pete asked me if I was handy at home repairs. Pete might not have know what he was bargaining for, but this led me down path of talking about things I learned...
2. from my grandfather. My grandpa Lou was a house painter. He dropped out in the 3rd grade to work and bring money into the family. When I was eight years old, he would take me on jobs and teach me how to paint. At the end of the work day (he started early, done at 3 pm)...
3. he’d take me to the neighborhood bar in Clifton, NJ, so grandpa could “get his medicine.” He’d drink his PBR & smoke his filterless Camels. I’d drink a Coke & snack on pretzels. Sitting on a barstool next to grandpa, this 8-year-old kid felt like he was king of the world. . .
4. Thanks to grandpa, I can paint, roof, and do some light plumbing and carpentry. Funny how those memories from 50 years ago got promoted by Pete telling me he had replaced a screen door at his house and asking me, “so, are you handy?” Thanks for chat this morning, Pete.

1. So today, de facto impeachment hearings open with the testimony of John Dean, White House Counsel for Nixon during Watergate. In the ‘70s, Dean “flipped” & pleaded guilty for his participation in the Watergate cover-up. He testified and served time. I am of two minds about...
2. beginning the hearings with Dean’s testimony. On the one hand, he can bring an important historical perspective to issues such as presidential crimes, obstructing justice by covering up said crimes, the duties and responsibilities of a White House Counsel (WHC) . . .
3. the pressures that can be brought to bear on a WHC by a president desperately attempting to cover up his own misconduct/abuses of power, and how difficult and perilous a decision it was for Dean to cooperate against a corrupt administration and a criminal president. . .

1. This is not a good development. Prosecutors better have a convincing reason to offer the judge regarding why they are declining to comply with the judge’s order to make public certain matters in the Flynn case. I’m the first to admit that Judge Sullivan’s order is unusual...
2. However, prosecutors refuse to comply with court orders at their peril. Unless there is a sealed filing in the case that further explains the prosecutor’s decision to decline to comply with the court order, I anticipate Judge Sullivan might issue a “Show Cause” order . . .
3. Directing the prosecutors to demonstrate why they should not be held in contempt for failing to comply with a court order. We’re not there yet, but this is the kind of thing that could ripen into a true constitutional crisis. Potential danger ahead . . .

1. This is a great point. Here’s my take (& it’s not one that will make justice-seekers happy): let’s assume federal prosecutors indict the president after he leaves office for crimes that were committed more than 5 years before the indictment is handed down . . .
2. The statute of limitations says that you must charge someone within 5 years of the crime being committed. The prosecutors argue to the judge that because the DOJ/OLC policy says we can’t indict a sitting president, the judge should deem that the statute of limitations . . .
3. was tolled (paused) during the time Trump was in office. The judge could rightfully say to the prosecutor, “Show me the LAW that says you can’t indict a president while he’s in office.” The prosecutor would have to answer, “there is no law, just a DOJ/OLC opinion . . .

Talking about cousins I don't see that often, I have a second cousin who I've only met once or twice. When I moved to St Andrews it turned out she was the best friend of the wife of one of my colleagues in my small department.

I was always unfit , so it was a big surprise when it turned out I could keep running for a long time if not very fast.

I achieved my lifetime running goal when I ran a 10k in fewer minutes than my age in years, doing it in less than 50 minute when I was over 50.
