Update. George Nader will remain detained ahead of Monday's preliminary hearing; judge agreed Nader posed too great a risk to the community's safety and that there were "no combination of conditions" that would convince him otherwise. Story for @CourthouseNews coming up.
Magistrate Judge Ivan Davis provided a litany of concerns he had about the potential for Nader, 60, to flee. He has a villa in the UAE, a chalet in Lebanon, his net worth is around $3 million and he has at least $1 million in cyber currency alone.
In phones recovered by FBI after his arrest Monday, they found texts between between Nader and Emirati Crown Prince Mohammad bin Zayed as well as Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. His contact list included ambassadors to Russia, Qatar and UAE.
Nader’s defense attorney, also failed to convince the judge that Nader's precarious health condition – he recently had triple bypass heart surgery in Germany – should preclude him from detention.
The judge reviewed of a note from an anesthesiologist – not a cardiac surgeon or related physician – who suggested Nader be released for treatment but was unconvinced of its credibility.
Prosecutors objected to the characterization by defense attorneys that Nader was desperately ill, saying: “When the government brought Mr. Nader to a doctor for evaluation on Monday, the doctor said: don’t bring healthy people in here."
Once the story is updated, there will be more color from today's proceedings. If I had to sum it up in a nutshell, however, I'd say this: The judge was NOT having any funny business today.
The preliminary hearing is Monday at 3PM. I will be there for @CourthouseNews. Thanks to all of the new followers who joined me and thanks to those that stick around. We are just getting warmed up.
