One of the things we'll need in the new climate reality is more public drinking fountains. The temperance movement put in a bunch of huge ones, for different reasons, back in the day. The Romans, ditto. We can make drinking water available everywhere, also reducing plastic.
There is at least one good bottle filling stations/fountain on Market street, for example. They should be everywhere and as uniformly signed/ signaled as possible.
Water fountains helped end cholera epidemics and also, a la the Temperance Movement, helped provide a non-alcohol source of fluid, which was really a thing! 99percentinvisible.org/episode/founta…
Like so many public things, water fountains got scaled back, in no small part because of direct or indirect corporate challenges. (Don't get me started about the schools and soda.) More fountains! With dog basins at the base, please.
I was walking to work today and it was hot and i was parched and boy, did I think about where a fountain might be. Dipped into a few auto body places, but even their waiting rooms were about vending machines and coffee stations only. Drinking water is a civic right.
Anyway, like protected bike lanes, urban trees, pollinator zones, or rain catchment systems, public drinking fountains are one of those things, relatively small in cost and feasibility, that make a huge civic and climate difference.
Back to my rant that maybe the #1 thing most people can do to fight for a sustainable future is to get on and attend local zoning boards.
