Up until industrial revolution, whole of human society was organized around grandparents, parents, & children.

Everything about what it meant to be human had to be passed on orally through those generations.

When information took on a more central role, a gulf emerged between the generations.

If you could get access to new & valuable information, you could get a new life.

But that information has created situations we don't know how to handle
We used to have very little information, but we were flush in meaning

Now we are drowning in information, and starved of meaning.

We are meaning making creatures — that’s how we survive
We used to have strong culture and mythology contained in our tribe—over time it became completely dismantled.

And now we are without mythology and culture, and the role of meaning has shifted from culture to the individual
What is meaning?

What is true?

We don't have good answers to these questions.

We get to choose - Which is both daunting and freeing

We finally get to choose! But what choices are we going to make?

We’re realizing that we are social beings & make meanings with others.

Systems thinking needs to become part of the tool kit
Emphasizes diff between individuation and individuality:

One says I am my own person over here...

The other says I am claiming responsibility for who I am and still chooses to be part of a culture without shirking that responsibility (response-ability).
