@karnikajit, Mala Lalvani, and Manali Phatak's 2019 @epw_in article studied an incumbent candidate’s chances of getting re-elected in different regions in India. Can you guess which region gives an incumbent the highest chance of being re-elected?
Have you voted yet? Karnik, Lalvani and Phatak’s article looks at Lok Sabha elections from 1980 to 2014, and found that an incumbent’s chances of getting re-elected depended upon three categories: political affiliation, geographic region, and certain socio-economic factors.
An incumbent candidate contesting from southern India has a 47% higher chance of being re-elected, which is the highest among the different regions in the study.
Using electoral data published by the ECI between 1980–2014, the authors found that the chances of re-election for coastal regions increased by 29% and for the Hindi–speaking belt decreased by over 50%
