@tofreedommm @JohnBlakeCNN @CNN 1-There is so much wrong with this article, I don’t know where to start, except to say that it needs significant revision, or scrap it altogether. Who gave Blake the OK to write this & WHY. @SkyCerulean @tobiasbuckell @DeannaHoak @RSGAT @TParkerSC @staceyNYCDC @geedee215
@tofreedommm @JohnBlakeCNN @CNN @SkyCerulean @tobiasbuckell @DeannaHoak @RSGAT @TParkerSC @staceyNYCDC @GeeDee215 2-This could’ve been a thoughtful conversation about language, names, and culture, but NO. It’s reductive trash about race and gives misinformation.
@tofreedommm @JohnBlakeCNN @CNN @SkyCerulean @tobiasbuckell @DeannaHoak @RSGAT @TParkerSC @staceyNYCDC @GeeDee215 3-There’s NO SUCH THING as a “white sounding name.” All anyone has to do is maybe chat w/some Europeans. Iceland, French, Scottish, Czech, Swiss, German, Ukraine etc. might all be “white” but their names won’t likely sound alike AT ALL. That’s typical American laziness.
@tofreedommm @JohnBlakeCNN @CNN @SkyCerulean @tobiasbuckell @DeannaHoak @RSGAT @TParkerSC @staceyNYCDC @GeeDee215 4-The USA fails at geography & it shows in the failings of this article. Oversimplification of WORDS & reductive associations about race & language.
@tofreedommm @JohnBlakeCNN @CNN @SkyCerulean @tobiasbuckell @DeannaHoak @RSGAT @TParkerSC @staceyNYCDC @GeeDee215 5-There are Arab names. For example, Jamal & Aliyah are Arab names that also are common among Muslims. They’re not “Black names” except that many African Diaspora folx have Arab / Muslim heritage. IT’S CALLED CULTURAL MEMORY.
@tofreedommm @JohnBlakeCNN @CNN @SkyCerulean @tobiasbuckell @DeannaHoak @RSGAT @TParkerSC @staceyNYCDC @GeeDee215 6-I suggest consulting with folx who specialize in linguistics & cultural anthropologists to understand how naming occurs & what the connections are to culture.
@tofreedommm @JohnBlakeCNN @CNN @SkyCerulean @tobiasbuckell @DeannaHoak @RSGAT @TParkerSC @staceyNYCDC @GeeDee215 7-The entire point of the article should have been about names & bias, but instead misses the entire mark by promoting inaccurate information & racist stereotypes.

It is an Arab word that translates to “majestic,” “lofty,” “high.” It requires you to bow. 👑 It is also common in India. 🙂 What’s the story behind your name? #whatsinaname
