I mean no disrespect by this (I really like @sadiqkhan) but every time I hear him speak about Trump it reminds me of a bullied kid at a school with a culture of bullying trying desperately to maintain his dignity
This is also how I felt listening to @sajidjavid talk about not being invited to the state dinner. They are both hugely impressive professionals (leaving politics aside) at the top of their respective trees but degraded by Trump but also the lack of institutional support for them
@sajidjavid Unpacking this, I think it's to do with the uncertainty Muslim people must feel when the key institutions don't quite stand up for Khan and Javid - particularly the governmen. Condemnation of Trump's tweets were equivocal. Statements about Javid's invitation mealy mouthed
@sajidjavid From a perspective of the Jewish community, even though it is long established, there is a general anxiety that Jews are sometimes tolerated but not 100% welcome. Obviously, reality varies but the anxiety persists. That's why solidarity in these kind of situations is so crucial
@sajidjavid I appreciate there are international diplomatic considerations, but I would have thought this is an issue - clear racism - where we can as a a country rise above ordinary politics and *just say no*. How people responded to Trump will not be forgotten
@sajidjavid To reiterate - this is not of a criticism of Javid or Khan, who have responded with great dignity. But I feel they have been let down.
