This is the big news of the night and may have long term implications for the Tory Party - all leadership candidates commit to an independent investigation into Islamophobia. Should be by a QC or former judge
The battle will be over (a) who carries it out - must be someone properly independent, not equivalent of Shami Chakrabarti (who was Labour member and immediately ennobled by Corbyn...
(b) what are the terms of reference? These *must* be decided in consultation with the Muslim communities. Time to stop freezing out the @MuslimCouncil as they have been most on top of this issue...
(c) mustn’t repeat mistake of Chakrabarti report by not looking at and concluding on particular incidents. Investigation can’t have bits unless it reviews real incidents and reaches conclusions on accountability...
(d) party must commit to it being published. Otherwise the organisation can’t be held to account for implementing recommendations. Can be partially redacted if there are GDPR issues but it must be published.
If the party mess this up (and perhaps even if they don’t) the EHRC will I expect come knocking. So must get it right.
